Because Bellemere could not pay for her entire family, she was used as an example by Arlong and shot in front of Nojiko and Nami. Nami was then kidnapped and forced create maps for Arlong because, even at the age of 8, she displayed talent at cartography.

Arlong and Nami struck a deal that if Nami raised 100,000,0000 belli, Arlong would sell her Cocoyashi and the villagers would be free. For 10 years, Nami made maps and stole money and treasures from pirates. She joined up with the crew of the Going Merry, and became very close with the captain, Luffy, before stealing their ship and treasure and returning to Cocyashi.

Luffy and the crew followed her to Cocoyashi in the hopes of getting her to return to the crew. After Arlong betrayed Nami's deal and shot Nojiko, Luffy and crew took on and defeated Arlong.
